Lizonia emperigonia

Hosts: Polytrichum commune and P. formosum

The archetypal splash cup parasite of Polytrichales. L. emperigona has 8-spored asci and is described from P. commune. However, material also seeming to fit within the species concept also occurs on sterile P. formosum shoot apices and rarely its antheridial cups. Cryptic taxa may be involved, as illustrated by the slightly deviating spore types of the two fresh samples shown below.
