Bryosphaeria bryophila

Host: Hylocomium splendens

A phone photo of a ruptured ascoma showing most of the micro-characters useful for identification. Note the multicellular setae on the fruitbody, light, elongated hyphal cells, and the asci containing 8 3-septate brown spores. The species lacks a hymenial jelly that reacts with iodine, separating it from Epibryon despite many superficial similarities. Found in Scotland, Resipole. September 2024.
