Bryocentria confusa

Host: Frullania dilatata

B. confusa is very similar to B. brongniartii and grows on the same host plant. However, key differences include a mixture of leaf-perforating and non-leaf-perforating (superficial) perithecia in B. confusa vs. leaf-perforating in B. brongniartii, as well as B. confusa having longer, more cylidrical ascospores. There are also differences between the species at the nrLSU locus. A full description with better images is in Greiff et al. (2024).

Frullania dilatata infected by B. confusa (left) and B. brongniartii (right), showing differences in perithecium behaviour. Note also the brown discoloration of the host cells around the perforation point in the inset for B. confusa.
Cylindrical ascospores of the holotype fresh in water.
